The Sugar Fix-Richard J Johnson

September 15, 2010

I want to use this alternative medicine book to highlight the importance of a holistic appproach to health. Johnson’s message is that being overweight is due to our intake of sugar. There are many illnesses associated with being overweight such as coronary disease and diabetes and Johnsons proposal is that all of them are dependent upon our sugar intake, not fat, not carbohydrates. More than this his thesis is that the sugar which is really damaging is Fructose.
Recent research has also linked Fructose as the agent which feeds replication of at least some cancer cells.
But fructose is the sugar which is found in fruit and nearly everyone agrees that fruit is a very healthy contribution to our diet providing many vitamins as well as dietary roughage. What are we to make of this? I return to my opening statement about the importance of a holistic approach to health. the truth is that if our only source of fructose is from fruit, then the amount of fructose consumed seems unlikely to be a dangerous threat to our health as a contributor to diabetes or a ‘food’ for cancer.
It is well documented that obesity, diabetes and cancer have shown considerable increases in many western countries in the last forty years. Can this be associated with Fructose? Johnson believes that it can. His thesis is that these illnesses can be associated with the production and use of High Fructose Corn Syrup. This is a sweetener manufacured from corn which because of farming subsidies, has become a cheap alternative to natural sugar in the production of many processed foodstuffs, particularly carbonated soft drinks. It is the growth of this sweetener, Johnson claims, that is a major contributor to the obesity epidemic of the last thirty years.
Why is fructose more dangerous than other sugars? For this you will need to read the book.
It still seems that a balanced diet of natural, uprocessed foods provide a good basis for a healthy life.

ANSWER CANCER Stephen Parkhill

August 31, 2010

There are a number of different approaches to alternative medicine. This article examines a book which proposes that all chronic illness is emotional in origin. The nature of chronic illness in allopathic medicine is generally that it cannot be cured but only controlled. The proposal put forward by the author of this book is that chronic illnesses can actually be cured by finding the emotional cause and discharging the emotion. When the driving cause is removed then the illness has nothing to feed on and the natural body defences will eventually correct the symptoms.
This book, obviously from its title, talks a lot about cancer but also about other chronic illnesses. The authors findings are that the emotional baggage creating the disease vary from disease to disease but are similar in each disease and in doing so he concurs with Louise Hay.
The authors model is one which is familiar in psychology of a conscious and an unconscious mind. The conscious mind is only aware of immediate awareness although it may recall memories from the unconscious. The unconscious contols all our body systems and contains all our memories which may affect the body’s functioning thus causing illness.
Stephen Parkhill is a hypnotherapist and uses hypnosis to discover and discharge hidden emotions. Since this book was written nearly twenty years ago brain scans of hypnotic patients have shown that hypnotic imagination is as real to our perceptual systems as physical events. The disappointment then is that further books and articles have not come forward to revolutionise treatment of chronic illness. None the less I understand that Stephen has trained many hypnotists in his method who are now practicing what he preaches.
One reason that a more public awareness of these methods has not been achieved, is in the american legal system. The law in the US gives licensed doctors ownership of illness. It is illegal to practice any treatment of illness unless you are a doctor or have been asked to help by a doctor. Success does not therefore often get reported.
This approach as explained by Stephen Parkhill is very clearly explained in a very easy manner. If you need help however you may have to work hard through the grapevine to find a practitioner who can help you.
Similar approaches are also claimed to be successful, giving credence to the idea that illness is as much part of the mind as the body.
Despite vast amounts given to research, the incidence of cancer appears to grow. Stephen attributes this to the psychological affects of the modern media spreading fear and despair.
If you are interested in the concept of the the mind/body connection then this book is compelling reading and is thoroughly recommended.

Alternative Medicine Books - are you worried about your health?

August 05, 2010

Why a website about alternative medicine books? Frankly, if all you want is a list of
alternative medicine books, then there are several online bookstores which can provide
that information. This website is different.

Many people are becoming very concerned
about what they eat and the effects on their body of chemicals used in
producing these foods. But some of the most potent chemicals are swallowed
directly as pharmaceuticals. For those with chronic illnesses, the effects are
even more worrying. Their medical condition may be managed over a very long
term with chemicals that have only been tested in the short term. Even then
there may be significant side effects.

In the developed world, some are
beginning to question the vast sums that are being swallowed up by modern
medicine, particularly modern drugs. They question whether the results match
the sums involved. Many even question whether the results are illusory. Even if
the medicines involved are effective, are the side effects worse than the
original disease.

Don’t get me wrong. If an emergency
occurs, I want the best that emergency medicine can provide to be available to
me.  However beyond that point I would
like to know that the treatment was really good for my long term health.

And really the long term results are not
encouraging. Technically, medicine claims to have made many breakthroughs in
the last century and points to greatly enhanced life expectancy. However, much
of the improvement is due to the vast improvement in infant mortality figures.
So, having survived infancy, your life expectancy is hardly better than it was
a century ago.

One reason for this is the growth in the
incidence of cancer. Yet vast sums have been spent in research during the last
half century by pharmaceutical companies, charities and governments. Cigarette
smoking has been halved in many countries but the incidence of cancer is on the
increase. The medical response is to treat the symptoms by surgery, radiation
and poisoning; hoping to arrest the cancer, at least temporarily, before
killing the patient. Does this make any sense? Independent research suggests
that malignant cells are forming in our bodies throughout our lives and being
eliminated by the immune system. Why then destroy the immune system with
chemicals at the time it is needed most. Equally, research has also indicated
that the onset of cancer is invariably associated with recent stress inducing
factors in the patient’s life. Is it time to remember that every effect has a
cause and ask the healthcare profession why they are not researching treating
the cause rather than the effect?

It is not only in cancer treatment that
we find that the universal law of cause and effect has been forgotten. The
profession of medicine is supported by pharmaceutical company money. In return
they appear to turn a blind eye to the fact that most new drugs have published
results barely better than the placebo they test against and that unfavourable
trials are rarely published or submitted to the authorities who are supposed to
regulate them.

But even the testing procedures are
designed so that they are only workable for drug testing. Many alternative
processes are clearly not suited to ‘Double Blind’ test methodology. Some reports
suggest that this methodology, either by error or design, is not accurate even
for simple drug trials. And they call this a scientific approach and evidence
based medicine.

These are the themes that this website
will return to and expand on. However, a website can never give the in depth
coverage necessary to fully understand the arguments. The aim of this site will
be to introduce some ideas and concepts and suggest some alternative medicine
books that will give you a coverage that is both broader and more detailed than
can be managed here.

This is Alternative Medicine Books info.
